CA keeping up with appeals being filed

CEBU, Philippines – The disposal of cases in the Court of Appeals Cebu Station has been increasing for the past years, according to Executive Justice Gabriel Ingles, who presented the summary report of all cases from 2004 up to September 31, 2015 during the 11th year anniversary of CA Cebu Station.

“For the past eleven years, especially during the last five years or since 2011, we have consistently disposed more cases than filed, resulting to a steady drop in the total number of pending cases,” Ingles said.

In 2004, there were 3,181 court caseload of which 396 were disposed. In 2005, there were 7,701 total cases of which 2,359 were disposed. There were 7,856 cases in 2006 of which 2,630 were disposed.

Total caseload refers to all cases, including those carried over or pending from the previous year.

In 2007 there were 7,207 total cases of which 1,868 were disposed. At least, 5,339 cases were pending at the end of 2007. There was a decrease in the total of cases disposed in 2008 where only 1,372 were disposed from a total of 6,955.

The total court caseload in 2009 increased. The summary report shows 7,547 total cases of which 1,249 were disposed. In 2010, there were 8,080 total cases of which 1,701 were disposed. The total court caseload in 2011 was 8,423 of which 2,335 were disposed cases. In 2011, there were 6,088 cases pending at the end of the year.

In 2012 there were 7,671 total caseload while there were 2,303 disposed cases. In 2013 there were 7,303 total caseload while there were 2,505 disposed cases. In 2014 there were 6,514 total caseload while there were 2,169 disposed cases. As of September 31, 2015 there were 5,720 total caseload while there were 1,836 disposed cases and the pending cases are 3,884.

Ingles, however, admitted that there were many pending cases because of the reorganization of the justices.

New cases

Most of the new cases filed for appeal before the Court of Appeals since 2004 up to September last year were labor cases, land disputes and drug cases.

In terms of cases filed, Maria Ruste, division clerk of court of 18th Division said the number of cases filed and number of cases disposed since 2004 to September 30, 2015 as prepared by statistician Joan Reyes shows that in 2004 there were 686 cases filed and there were 396 cases disposed.

In 2005 there were 2,430 cases filed and 2,359 cases disposed; in 2006 there were 2,076 filed while 2,630 cases disposed; in 2007 there were 1,771 cases filed while there were 1,868 cases disposed; in 2008 there were 1,742 cases filed while there were 1,372 cases disposed.

In 2009 there were 1,683 cases filed while there were 1,249 cases disposed; in 2010 there were 1,811 cases filed while there were 1,701 cases disposed; in 2011 there were 1,733 cases filed while 2,335 cases disposed; in 2012 there were 1,596 cases filed while there were 2,303 cases disposed.

In 2013 there were 1,674 cases filed while there were 2,505 cases disposed, in 2014 there were 1,572 cases filed while there were 1,836 cases disposed and as of September 30, 2015 there were 1,102 cases filed while 1,836 cases disposed.

Since 2004 to September 30, 2015 the total cases filed were 19,876 while the total number of cases disposed was 22,723.

Ingles added they have one year from the date of the submission of case for decision to decide the case. -— /BRP (FREEMAN)
