Delivery truck falls off cliff in Toledo City

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A delivery truck from Minglanilla town bound for Negros Island Region fell off a cliff in Barangay Media Once, Toledo City yesterday morning.

The driver, Gilbert Esquila Malinaw, 35, of Bacolod City and his crew, Raymond Almoger Canete, 19, of Cadiz City; Jhonwel Caballo Domen, 23; and Alexander Caballo Halaron, 29, of La Libertad, Negros Island Region, were immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.

SPO1 Edmund Liston of the Don Andres Soriano Community Precinct, said that the truck was supposed to deliver boxes of softdrinks from Minglanilla town to Negros via Toledo City.

When the truck left Minglanilla, it was reportedly running smoothly but when it reached Toledo City, the driver noticed that the brakes were not functioning anymore.

Malinaw allegedly tried to maneuver the steering wheel but could no longer control it since the vehicle was already descending the road from Barangay Don Andres Soriano to Barangay Media Once.

Upon reaching Barangay Media Once, the driver completely lost control of the steering wheel and the delivery truck went straight down a 15-meter cliff.

The driver and the helpers suffered injuries and were immediately rescued by the residents and were brought to Toledo City Hospital. —/ATO (FREEMAN)
