Chinese who sold ‘copied’ vehicle accessory released

Grace Melanie L. Lacamiento - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Chinese businessman who allegedly sold counterfeit motorcycle accessories was released from jail since no one filed a case against him.

Yidang Chen, 36, a native of Fujian, China, was released from detention last Monday after the complainant, Iluminado Ornopia, owner of MS Motosuit, did not show up to lodge a criminal complaint against him, said Inspector Gomersendo Mandawe, deputy chief of Cebu City Police Office’s Intelligence Branch.

Mandawe said Chen and Ornopia might have reached a settlement between themselves, leaving the Chinese national free of charges for violation of Republic Act 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

“Mao pud ingon sa kaila sa dinakpan nga naa sila’y joint settlement,” said Mandawe.

Mandawe, however, cannot divulge the details of the settlement since they have not been also informed by the complainant as of press time.

Chen was apprehended in a buy-bust operation Saturday afternoon after he was caught in the act of selling fake MS brand of motorcycle seat covers in Barangay San Roque, Cebu City where he also operates RCL Motor Parts Trading.

The operation stemmed from the complaint filed by Ornopia who alleged that he is the registered owner of the said brand of motorcycle accessory, which were allegedly copied by Chen.

CIB operatives confiscated 148 pieces of colored seat covers and 150 plain ones which were reportedly sold by Chen from P150 to P230, but were originally priced at P400 each. — (FREEMAN)
