Priest “slapping” incident: Palma: We’ll abide by court decision

Decemay P. Padilla - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines- Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma yesterday appealed to the public to also listen to the side of priest accused of slapping a burger machine attendant, as he declared that the archdiocese will adhere to whatever decision the court would render on the matter.

"I think it’s being brought to the court.  Let’s just wait for the result and for a more comprehensive report.  Let’s not just listen sa one side but also side sa pari,” the prelate said.

Without saying that the priest is guilty or not, he said there is a need for Fr. William Ybañez to ask for forgiveness to complainant Teresita Sambrana as to what happened.

Sambrana alleged that Fr. Ybañez, parish priest of Barangay Bitoon, Dumanjug, Cebu, allegedly slapped her Thursday last week.

Father Ybañez was reportedly angry after she allegedly broke the lock of the gate of the compound where the church is located.

The priest, however, denied hitting Sambrana, although he admitted trying to scare her by moving as if he wanted to slap her.

After the allegation surfaced, Palma sent Msgr. Rey Penagunda, Archdiocese of Cebu vicar general for south Cebu, to investigate and speak with Ybañez. — /RHM (FREEMAN)
