Heritage body rep to check Colon prior to start of drainage project

May B. Miasco/RHM - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A representative from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines is set to inspect the whole stretch of Colon Street, which is recognized as the oldest road in the country.

This came after the Department of Public Works and Highways - Cebu City District Engineering Office queried whether the drainage project to be implemented there is under its control relative to site management of historical spots.

In a May 5, 2015 letter, District Engineer Nicomedes Leonor, Jr. said they are concerned since the project would involve excavation and Colon Street is historical landmark.

He assured in his letter, though, that DPWH would “restore the portion of Colon Street (that would be) affected by the excavation works (and would ensure to return it) to its original state in order to preserve its value and significance, the same, being a historical landmark here in Cebu.”

In a separate interview, however, City Administrator Lucille Mercado confirmed that an NHCP representative would inspect the street, only that she was not told of the precise reason for the visit.

Mercado said they are anticipating for the NHCP representative to come this week or not later than August.

She likewise said, though, that NHCP  did not say if the city could already proceed with the drainage project. Atty. Jerone Castillo, whom Mayor Michael Rama designated to take charge of the city’s Colon revitalization project, told her the master plan is already “almost done.”

“We already have a selected contractor and allotted budget to start the project’s implementation,” Mercado said, adding that it would be a waste if the project cannot be started. – (FREEMAN)
