Transport group identifies areas it likes as PUJ stops
CEBU, Philippines- The National Confederation of Transport- workers Union-Central Visayas is meeting Cebu City’s traffic office within the week to properly identify the city’s loading and unloading stops for public utility jeepneys.
“Initially naa na mi gi-submit asa nga mga lugar ang loading and unloading areas sa Cebu City pero di pa kumpleto,” said NCTU-CV vice president Romeo Armamento.
He said they still have to determine further the remaining areas they prefer where passengers can get in and/or disembark from PUJs.
He, however, clarifed that NCTU-CV is merely suggesting the locations, as they still have to verify with the City Traffic Operations Management if their suggestions are feasible or not.
He said that Cebu City currently has no clear PUJ stops that they find this a difficult situation for them especially since the fines for traffic violations, which include picking up passengers in “no-stopping” zones, is very high.
“Mao na nga gusto gyud namo nga maklaro gyud asa ang mga loading and unloading areas para ang mga pasahero magtultol na. Kay mahal kaayo ang penalty sa maong violation,” said Armamento.
Earlier, NCTU announced its plan to file a petition before the Department of Transportation and Communications and the Department of Interior and Local Government for the proper designation of stopping areas for public utility jeepneys not just in Cebu City but in the entire Metro Cebu.
Armamento said that through the DILG, it can request the different local government units concerned to have a dialogue with NCTU on this and other concerns of public transport drivers.
NCTU-CV is composed of various drivers’ groups and over 2,000 public utility jeepney drivers plying 22 different routes in Cebu. (FREEMAN)
