Tanod smashed in the face with softdrinks bottle, dead

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A barangay tanod died after he was struck in the face with a bottle in Barangay Madridejos, Alegria town Friday night.

Eutique Devila, 55, died from severe wounds after he was smashed in the face with a one-liter bottle of softdrinks by Edward Lendio, 36.

According to Police Officer 1 Carmelito Dacula, desk officer of Alegria Police Station, Devila was walking on his way home past 6 p.m. with his siblings and was crossing a river when Lendio hit him with the bottle.  The bottle broke into pieces upon hitting Lendio’s face.

“Mao gyu’y gigamit paghapos (ang botelya), kay naguba man ang nawong gyud,” PO1 Dacula said.

Before he died, Devila was still able to call for help but he had died when residents arrived at where he was.

Rosemary Jacobe, who lived nearby, allegedly heard the victim calling for help, but since she was attending to her children and her husband was not around, she just went to her neighbors and told them of what she heard.

The victim was already dead by the time they responded to his call for help.

A few hours later, the suspect went to the police station and surrendered himself.

Dacula said the suspect alleged he had a grudge against the victim.  According to the suspect, he was running an errand for his wife and was walking along the road when he met the victim.

The victim allegedly uttered to him, “wala gyud ta’y kompiyansa sa asawa,” referring to the suspect’s wife, which allegedly irked him.

The two of them figured in a heated argument.

The victim allegedly hit him which resulted to a fistfight. He then hit the victim’s face with a bottle and fled.

“Nihapak niya og una, nagsinukmagay sila, unya nalupig kay 55 anyos versus 36,” narrated Dacula.

The family of the victim will be pressing charges against the suspect.  (FREEMAN)
