Small vessels still grounded

Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Despite having no public storm warning signal anywhere in Cebu, small vessels remain grounded as of last night because of the gale warning issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Commander Weniel Azcuna, of the Philippine Coast Guard-Cebu District Command, said that all vessels under 250 gross tons are not allowed to travel.

“Small vessels are prohibited to sail,” Azcuna said.

Vessels travelling in areas affected by typhoon Ruby were also not given clearance.

“Ang mga vessels na dadaan ng Mindoro wala paring travel naka-stranded pa ‘yung mga barko pati ‘yung galing Manila at papunta doon,” Azcuna said.

He said that most of the vessels also are still in the areas where they took shelter during the onslaught of Ruby in the Visayas.

“Marami kasing pasahero ang nagtatanong sa office natin kung may barko na pero halos lahat nasa sheltering area pa,” Azcuna added.

As of yesterday, Azcuna said there were already vessels above 250 gross tons available for Siquijor-Dumaguete route.

Azcuna reported no maritime incident when typhoon Ruby battered Central Visayas last weekend. He said this signifies that government and public preparations have been effective.  (FREEMAN)
