Del Mar commends Pacquiao victory

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City north district Rep. Raul del Mar sponsored a resolution commending his colleague, Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, for the latter’s overwhelming and indisputable victory over Christopher Mark “Chris” Algieri II in Macau, China.

Del Mar submitted House Resolution No. 1697 for approval yesterday.

Del Mar said Pacquiao is the first and sole Filipino boxing champion to win world titles in different weight divisions and defended the WBO welterweight championship successfully against Algieri last Sunday.

Pacquiao dominated the fight with six knockdowns with all three judges affirming the victory with a unanimous decision.

“Manny Pacquiao has been the rallying and unifying force for Filipinos at home and abroad, epitomizing ideals and virtues of a ‘People’s Champion’ or ‘Pambansang Kamao’ and last Sunday once more he proved the heartwarming magic of touching lives of fellow Pinoys, inspiring and nurturing hope, especially among those in crisis and pain, such as the survivors of Yolanda in the typhoon-ravaged areas of Leyte, Samar and Cebu,” Del Mar’s resolution reads.

Del Mar said Pacquiao’s achievement is beyond sports, to which his string of triumphs in the ring attests and makes him an icon.

“It also provides the plain yet sterling example of overcoming adversity in his early fights and now, on top of the heap and master of his game, disciplining himself in the giddy yet sobering period of being model, hero and celebrity,” the resolution reads further.

Del Mar added that the House of Representatives expresses the appreciation of a grateful nation for Pacquiao’s “latest jewel in his studded boxing crown, a remarkably invaluable contribution to boosting the country’s honor and lifting the national spirit.” —(FREEMAN)
