79-year-old dead, man hurt in road accidents
CEBU, Philippines - A 79-year-old widow died after she was hit by a passenger jeepney in Basak Pardo, Cebu City Friday while a motorcycle driver got injured after a sport utility vehicle hit him in Tunghaan, Minglanilla town yesterday.
Marcelina Navares, a resident of Barangay Kinasang-an, Cebu City, was reportedly crossing the street on her way home at around 9 p.m. last Friday when she was hit by a public utility jeepney, 23-year-old Celso Quintinita was driving.
Due to the impact, Navares reportedly fell hard and hit her head on the pavement that led to her death, said Senior Police Officer 4 Ramondreman Budiongan of Traffic Patrol Group of Minglanilla Police.
Responding Basak Pardo Emergency Rescue unit assessed and declared Navares as already dead.
Quintinita, who temporarily resides in Cogon-Pardo, Cebu City, was then bound to Naga City. His daily route includes Punta Princesa, Cebu City to Naga City and vice versa.
Budiongan said Quintinita initially denied hitting the victim, claiming that he was driving at a normal pace, but eventually admitted to hitting her with the PUJ.
The traffic investigator added they saw a dent at the bumper of the PUJ which they believed was where the victim was hit.
The driver is currently detained at TPG stockade while the victim’s body was brought to St. Francis Memorial Homes.
Meanwhile, Concordio Talandron, 57, was injured after he was hit by Jerick Badayos, 35, with an SUV along Barangay Tunghaan, Minglanilla yesterday afternoon. Both were residents of Naga City.
Police Officer 2 Vincent Aliñabo of Minglanilla Police Station said that Badayos was bound south from Cebu City when the incident happened.
Badayos was turning left to supposedly have his vehicle filled with gasoline at a nearby area when someone slammed onto his car.
The man, who turned out to be Talandron, was reportedly driving a motorcycle and reportedly did not notice the approaching SUV.
The victim was immediately brought to South General Hospital in Naga City. He is already safe from danger as of press time, according to Aliñabo.
The two involved parties came up with a settlement that Badayos shall shoulder the medical expenses of Talandron. — NSA (FREEMAN)
