CEBU, Philippines - The first semester of the school year has already ended, but Cebu City government scholars have yet to receive their transportation and school supply allowances.

Ester Cubero of the City Scholarship Committee said this is because there are schools which have not submitted yet their billings.

The committee’s records showed that of the 24 schools accredited under the Cebu City College Scholarship Program, only 10 schools have passed the billings.

Among those are Golden Success College with 47 enrollees, Center for Industrial Technology and Enterprise with 147, Technological Education and Skills Development Authority with 16, CCMC College of Nursing with 31, Banilad  Center  for Professional Development with 17, CRDP Caregiver School with 7, STI College with 9, Clarita Bacalso Dacua College with 29 and Don Bosco Technology Center with 30.

She said the scholars studying in these schools will possibly receive their allowances next month with the papers already processed by the city’s accounting office.

Section 9 of Ordinance No. 2333 known as “Cebu City College Scholarship Program” states that each city scholar shall receive “P1,000 per year (or P500 per semester) for school supply expenses.”

In addition, it states that “those who graduated from the mountain barangays of Cebu City shall receive an additional allowance of P1,000 per month for transportation expenses.”

Cubero said based on an agreement with the accredited schools, they should pass the billings two weeks after the enrollment schedule so that the scholars can enjoy the benefits.

According to her, the city government will be sending a letter to the schools which are yet to pass the billings in order to remind them.

Based on the ordinance, the city scholars would also be given P10,000 for their tuition fees and other related fees.

However, due to the delay of passing the requirements, the city government cannot also process the money for the tuition fees just yet.

“I do not know ngano. Basin wala nila gilain ang mga names sa old ug new nga scholars pag-enrol,” Cubero said.

Cubero is urging the schools to comply with the requirements as soon as possible.  (FREEMAN)
