PB to LGUs: Remove all settlers from cemeteries

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Board requested the local government units in the province to clear public cemeteries of illegal settlers in preparation for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2, respectively.

The body passed a resolution sponsored by Board Member Arleigh Sitoy, who said some public cemeteries have become a “haven for illegal settlers” that crowd the areas and cause inconvenience to the public.

“Solemn occasions such as All Saints Day and All Souls Day should be commemorated free from distractions, nuisances and should be celebrated in a peaceful and orderly manner,” read the resolution.

Last week, the Cebu City Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification, and Enhancement team demolished more than 10 shanties at the Calamba cemetery upon the request of the San Nicolas Parish, which has jurisdiction over the cemetery.

PROBE Chief Raquel Arce said her office served notices to the illegal dwellers the week before and gave them a week to relocate.

She urged other parishes to take the initiative in requesting the city for the demolition of illegal structures inside cemeteries before All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day so PROBE could act against the illegal settlers.

In the same resolution, the PB urged law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring peace and order during the two days when Christians flock to cemeteries.

The PB said the police should be visible in different areas of cemeteries to deter lawless elements from preying on the populace.

“You cannot discount the possibility that petty crimes and criminality may occur during the said commemoration,” read the resolution. (FREEMAN)
