Cebu Provincial Hospital-Danao now also perform major surgery

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Hospital-Danao City can now perform major surgical procedures.

Yesterday, at least 10 operations were conducted at the hospital that included removal of breast mass, inguinal hernia, colloidal goiter, and cholelithiasis (gallstone), among others.

These procedures were done two weeks after CPH-Carcar opened its own major operations.

CPH-Danao City currently has 25-bed capacity and two operating rooms.

Prudencio Manubag, the chief of hospital, said they are aiming for the 100-bed capacity.

There are also four medical consultants on call who were hired by the provincial government and assigned at the hospital.

CPH-Danao also accommodates patients from the neighboring towns, including Liloan, Compostela and Carmen.

Cebu Governor Hilario Davide said the province is eyeing at upgrading the status of provincial and district hospitals to at least level one as part of the priority of his administration. To acquire the level one status, an operating room has to be established.

Last June 2014, Davide issued Executive Order No. 10 creating a project team to fast track the renovation of hospital facilities and the acquisition of hospital equipment for the different provincial and district hospitals.

Davide added that the upgrading would prevent congestion of medical referrals from the province to distant hospitals like Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, which could be a life threatening scenario during emergency cases.

There are four provincial and 12 district hospitals in Cebu, 10 of which have already been upgraded to level one by the Department of Health.

Other hospitals which have been given the upgrade status, aside from CPH-Danao, are the provincial hospitals in the cities of Bogo and Carcar, and the district hospitals in Bantayan, Barili, Badian, Tuburan, San Francisco, Argao, and Sogod.

On September 11, CPH-Carcar launched its major surgical operations to include, among others, appendectomy removal of appendix, Myomectomy for fibroids in the uterus, Caesarian Section, Thyroidectomy for thyroid gland, Modified Radical Mastectomy for the breast, Cholecystectomy for the gallbladder, and Hernia surgery. — (FREEMAN)
