Disaster preparedness trainings for families kick off in Cebu

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Social Welfare and Development-7 has started conducting its Family Disaster Preparedness Training in the different towns of Cebu. 

With the training, families are provided with information on how to prepare well before, during and after disasters that may hit their areas.

“Man-made or natural disasters they should be trained because they are the basic unit in the society and they can help also,” said Artemia Degamo, DSWD-7 focal person on disaster response.

DSWD will train local government unit officials and force multipliers from barangays who would also train their constituents.

The agenda of the training includes identifying and responding to landslides, flashfloods, and earthquakes.

“We will also inform them on the risk of living in a hilly portion, the importance of putting up their houses about 40 meters away from the shore, and not to touch any wirings during floods,” Degamo said, adding that the training is more on information education.

The town of Catmon complied with the training last month since it has been one of the affected towns in northern Cebu of previous typhoons that hit the province. With this, all typhoon victims were required by the LGU to attend the training before they were given the P10,000 Emergency Shelter Assistance.

“Nindot pud ilang pamaagi kay kadtong apektado required gyud muapil,” the focal person said.

 Carcar City will have its training in the third week of this month.

Other towns in the lineup include the cities of Talisay and Naga.

Degamo said they are waiting for the request from the local chief executive before they could schedule trainings.  (FREEMAN)
