New motorcycle license plates arrive

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A total of 26,000 new license plates for motorcycles in Region VII are now with the Land Transportation Office – 7 but cannot be distributed just yet until the plates assignment arrives.

Aside from the plates for motorcycles, 10,987 plates for four-wheeled vehicles are also on their way to Cebu for distribution in Region 7.

LTO Executive Director Emiliano Bantog, Jr. said the new design of the plate number bears a security mark.

LTO-7 Director Arnel Tancinco also said the license plates for motorcycles are for units that were registered from September 2013 to March 2014. He said he is yet to check the particulars on the plates for four-wheeled vehicles.

According to the Department of Transportation and Communication, the modern license plates are designed to halt the propagation of tampered or fake license plates. The new plate contains several advanced security features and a new alphanumeric design.

The DOTC also said that the new license plate has security images that cannot be removed by any known method without damaging the sheeting while the bolt head screw and nuts will have their own serial number, as well.

Meanwhile, Bantog said that LTO will be coming up with clarificatory guidelines on traffic violations to update existing rules.

“Driving while texting is considered an offense against reckless driving. Driving while browsing your cellphone is risky, reckless driving pa rin yan,” Bantog said. – (FREEMAN)
