MGB: Relocate Busay Elementary School now

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo/BRP - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - As rainy season has started, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau urged the Department of Education and the city government to act on its recommendation to relocate the Busay Elementary School to a safer place.

“Ang atoa, ang school mismo ma-relocate somewhere else nga dili landslide-prone. Kay actually ang vicinity sa Busay, very high gyud siya kay nag-move paman gud siya labi na karon nga magsugod na ang wet season, sige na sad og uwan-uwan, very dangerous gyud siya,” said DENR-7 information officer Eddie Llamedo.

Llamedo said that MGB-7 has done its part in providing technical assistance through the recommendation for immediate relocation of the school since it is in imminent danger.

“Ang MGB man gud, wala ta’y capability, or not within our mandate to implement or carry out kanang pag-relocate, ang DepEd nana siya ug ang LGU,” he said.

He said that the findings on geo-hazard mapping and assessment in 2007 was already given to the incumbent officials during that time, adding that the relocation should be the judgment call of the school, DepEd and local government unit.

He said that MGB-7 has assessed the area twice and the findings show risk.

“Before, very high. Karon, murag ni very high na siya ug very critical na gyud,” he said.

“Ato man gud gitan-aw ang physical situation ba. Ang klase man gud niya sa yuta very porous and very steep,” he said.

Llamedo said no amount of engineering intervention can fortify the vicinity of the school.

“So, mas best gyud nga ma-relocate na ang school. Ato gyud gihapong i-sustain until now ang recommendation sa MGB-7, to relocate the school,” he added.  (FREEMAN)
