Detainee escapes prison, arrested again the next day
CEBU, Philippines - A 19-year-old detainee of the Consolacion Police Station escaped from prison amid heavy rains Tuesday past 11 p.m. in Barangay Poblacion Occidental, Consolacion.
Lester Alfornon of Barangay Catarman, Liloan, escaped from the detention cell by destroying the ceiling and the metal sheets of the roof.
He was detained for theft and violations of RA 9165 or Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and RA 10591 or Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act after a security guard of a subdivision in Barangay Tayud, Consolacion caught him stealing iron scrap and shower accessories. At least 10 pieces of hand-rolled marijuana sticks and a bullet of 9mm pistol were also confiscated from him during a body search.
Alfornon, however, was arrested in a joint hot pursuit operation of the Danao City and the Consolacion police on Wednesday afternoon in Barangay Guinsay, Danao City.
PO1 Socrates Borinaga, desk officer, said that jailer PO1 Albert Jimenez initially checked the detention cell during the heavy rain and found that everything was intact and Alfornon was still there.
Jimenez, who was ending his shift, was supposed to turn over his tasks to the incoming personnel and checked everything again. It was at this point when he noticed that Alfornon was no longer inside.
There were two detainees in the detention cell at that time.
“Ang usa wala may intention mugawas kay dugang ra kuno sa iyang kaso pero wala pud siya nitawag namo kay dili kuno madungog kay kusog kaayo ang uwan,†Borinaga said in a phone interview.
Senior Inspector Cesar Misola, intelligence operative of Danao City Police Station, said that after escaping, Alfornon stole a bicycle in Liloan town which he used to reach Danao City. Alfornon even tried to sell the bicycle to somebody in Danao City.
Danao City police spotted Alfornon in Barangay Guinsay and arrested him.
Alfornon was identified by the Consolacion police and by Zenaido Jumamoy Jr., of Barangay Catarman, Liloan, who owns the bicycle. (FREEMAN)
