Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The municipality of Liloan has continued to give importance to education by helping poor students go to college through a scholarship program, Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco said.

A total of 1,185 scholars availed the scholarship program of the municipality, which allocated P6.6 million budget every year for the implementation of the program.

Mayor Frasco said he believes giving the children a good education is a way of helping alleviate poverty.

Since its inception in 2008, recipients of the “Duke Scholarship Program” have tripled in number. Most of the scholars are presently enrolled in different colleges and universities in Cebu City.

The scholarship program was established by the municipal government to support poor but deserving students who graduate from high school but cannot afford to pursue a college education.

Some of the scholars are enrolled in accountancy, business administration, engineering, and other courses. The municipal government also gives out a scholarship program with teachers as beneficiaries. Those who have availed of the program are teachers  taking up masteral degrees or advanced education programs.

In line with the education support thrust of the municipal government, Mayor Frasco also led in distributing school bags and school supplies and helped lobby funds for the construction of more classrooms. —/JMD (FREEMAN)
