Aron Apostol Rempohito - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A bonfire which was supposed to drive away mosquitoes ended up burning a hut resulting in the injury of two persons in Barangay Balao, Barili last Wednesday evening.

Oliver Lascuna and his 84-year-old father, Fidel, were rushed to the hospital after they sustained minor injuries. Oliver was injured in his palm while his father suffered first degree burns to his arms and face and second degree  burns to his legs and back.

Fidel was inside the hut when it caught fire at 7:03 p.m. from a bonfire he made using coconut husks. The old man wanted to drive away mosquitoes but burned their hut instead.

“Human nagpaaso ang biktima nipahuway siya sa sulod unya wala nabantayan nga nihinay og katap ang kalayo sa payag,” said fire investigator Jesus Garcia.

Garcia said that neighbors helped Fidel get out of the burning hut while some tried to put out the blaze.

The fire investigator estimated the damage at P15,000.  (FREEMAN)
