8000 mangroves against storm surge

Mechelle P. Florita/JMO - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Bantay Dagat Cebu City Chapter will plant at least 8000 mangroves at the Tonggo Islets off the South Road Properties (SRP) this coming Sunday.

The mangroves are meant to act as breakers in the event of a storm surge during undesirable weather.

â€œKay para maka-protect sa Cebu City (during heavy rain)…para kon mukuan ang bawd (these plants can help) ug para environment development,” said Ranulfo Sebusa, the group’s director.

Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella said the activity has the full support of the city government.

“Maayo na, pero ato nang tun-an. Of course we will make a proper recommendation to the mayor (who is on-leave) kay path mana sa mga barko. We have to consider balancing of concerns and interest. Ug makaayo na di ato nang suportahan,” Labella said.

It can be remembered that a storm surge caused by super typhoon Yolanda killed many when the typhoon struck the Visayas last November 8, 2013.

A storm surge is the abnormal rising of water because of the wind brought by the typhoon. – (FREEMAN)
