Catmon town dad seeks Cebu young legislators’ top post
CEBU, Philippines - A town councilor of Catmon, Cebu is contesting the presidency of the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL)-Cebu chapter.
Councilor Earl Tidy Oyas is now trying to get the support of four young Provincial Board members and 86 city and town councilors in the Province of Cebu to earn the seat.
Oyas said that he has yet to hear from any another young legislator in Cebu interested of the position vacated by former Tabogon vice mayor Ace Serafin.
Serafin, also the Central Visayas region president, did not run in the elections last May 13.
This prompted NMYL national president Dorothy Delarmente-Bagting to appoint Cebu PB Member Miguel Antonio Magpale as convenor for the reorganization of the league in Region 7.
“You are therefore authorized to convene and organize the members of NMYL in your region anytime between November 5 to 31, 2013,†Bagting said, in his memorandum to Magpale.
The election for Cebu Province is set on November 27 and 28, said Oyas.
Magpale said he is not running for any position; thus, he is also appointed to represent the region in the NMYL national council during the national election.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has already instructed the provincial governors, city and municipal mayors to encourage their young legislators to participate in the election.
NMYL is composed of all vice governors, city and municipal vice mayors, city and municipal councilors who are 40 years old below when elected during the May 2013 elections.
The presidents of the Association of Barangay Councils and the Sangguniang Kabataan are also NMYL members.
However, the ABC chapters of Cebu have not yet elected their respective presidents after the Oct. 28 barangay elections.
There are also no SK representatives after Congress suspended the election of new officers.— (FREEMAN)
