MSY gives Bohol truckloads of goods

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu-based Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung (MSY) Charitable Foundation Inc. also donated three truckloads of assorted goods for the devastated areas of Bohol.

The Cebuana businesswoman and philanthropist, together with 60 doctors and volunteers, visited Maribojoc town to distribute the relief items.

MSY’s group also conducted a medical mission in the town, wherein some people reported experiencing diarrhea due to the lack of potable water. Some residents also suffered cough and cold, high blood pressure, among ailments.

“We have to help the Boholanos kay luoy intawon kaayo sila,” said Yeung, who went to Bohol despite the difficulty in transportation.

She and the volunteers had to ride an ambulance and a police car just to reach the affected residents.

And since Anislag Bridge was destroyed, they were forced to ride a banca in crossing Anislag River just to reach Maribojoc town.

“It’s worth all the effort. Helping people, especially the needy, is everybody’s business. We have to help especially if we have the capacity to help,” Yeung said.

The MSY foundation joined forces with the Philippine Pediatric Society-Central Visayas and the Philippine Medical Women’s Association for the medical mission and relief operations.

Also, The FREEMAN learned that the price of gasoline in Maribojoc soared up to P70 per liter. As result, fare for a habal-habal (motorcycle-for-hire) ride also doubled to P50 per passenger.

“Maluoy sab unta mi sa mosakay nga mo-plete og mahal kay pareha ra ming tanan diri biktima sa linog.  Mahal ang plete kay nimahal man sad ang gasoline (We actually pity those who are forced to pay double the usual fare because they are also earthquake victims like us. But the price of gasoline has gone up),” said a habal-habal driver. (FREEMAN)
