LMP to give 12T Bohol families aid
CEBU, Philippines - The League of Municipalities in the Philippines (LMP) is joining relief efforts for earthquake victims in Bohol, targeting around 12,000 families.
At the Capitol compound in Cebu City yesterday, no less than Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante Jr., LMP-Cebu chapter president, took charge of the repacking of goods.
Some Capitol staff and other volunteers helped in the repacking of goods.
Jules Regner, a member of Diamante’s staff, disclosed that the LMP national purchased the goods, which include 480 sacks of rice, while the Cebu chapter contributed P150,000.
Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale had given LMP Cebu P500,000 from her Legislative Assistance Fund while Gov. Hilario Davide III also pledged P1.5 million for the league’s programs and activities.
Regner told The FREEMAN that each of the packs contains two kilos of rice, two packs of noodles, a can of sardines and a bottle of water.
Javier, Leyte Mayor Leonardo “Sandy†Javier, national president; Diamante, who is also vice president for the Visayas; and other LMP officers are set to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today at the Capitol.
Regner said the LMP officers themselves will personally distribute the goods tomorrow in the towns of Loon and Maribojoc in Bohol.
He said that the goods will be shipped to Bohol tonight. Diamante earlier said that the thrust of the present LMP leadership is to help poor municipalities, especially when the Priority Development Assistance Fund of lawmakers is no longer available.
The Cebu Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office is also receiving donations at the Capitol.—(FREEMAN)
