CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 is set to award outstanding barangay officials and members of Lupong Tagapamayapa on October 10, 2013 in line with the 22nd anniversary of the Local Government Code.
Ten barangay officials like barangay captains, councilmen, treasurers, and officers of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) will be recognized under three categories - highly urbanized city, component city and municipality.
The program is designed to recognize barangay officials in Central Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental) who have shown exemplary performance in discharging their functions.
The 13-year-old search, which began in 1991 is undertaken jointly by the Local Administration and Development Program Alumni Association of the Philippines- VII, the Liga ng mga Barangay, and local government units.
Meanwhile, the “Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives and Awards†(LTIA) is aimed at recognizing members of the Lupong Tagapamayapa that have demonstrated efficiency and effectiveness in securing the objectives of the Katarungang Pambarangay (KP) Law by settling or resolving disputes of barangay constituents through mediation, conciliation, and arbitration.
This alternative mode of settling disputes helps decongest court dockets and seen as effective in administering justice in the grassroots level.
The Lupong Tagapamayapa is an administrative body created by law to operationalize the barangay justice system which is better known as the KP Law.
The LTIA was established in 1997 pursuant to Section 406 (b) of the LGC of 1991 which mandates the DILG to grant economic and other incentives to lupong tagapamayapa for their outstanding contributions to attain the objectives of the KP Law. (FREEMAN)
