Unknown man shot dead in Sambag 2

CEBU, Philippines - A man was gunned down by an unidentified perpetrator in an interior portion in Barangay Sambag 2, Cebu City, shortly before noon yesterday.

PO1 Michael Angelo Singson of the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section said the victim was only identified as a certain “Sherwin” alias “Bongot”. He was estimated at about 30 years old.

Joselito Booc, 22, a resident of Sitio Kawayan, was also wounded in his left foot during the shooting. He was taken to the nearby Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

As per investigation by police, Sherwin was walking at the basketball court when a man, who did not bother concealing his face, shot him several times.

The assailant then fled toward Barangay Calamba.

The victim died on the spot. Singson said they found at least 10 gunshot wounds in his body. Powder burns were also found in the victim’s body, which indicated that he was shot at close range.

Tessa Ruiz, 64, who owns a store beside the basketball court, said she immediately looked for her three-year-old granddaughter when she heard several gunshots.

“Abi gani sa akong apo na naa ra’y nagpabuto-pabuto, nilili pa siya. Ako dayon gisud, wa ko kahibaw unsa’y nahitabo sa gawas,” she said.

Another resident, who refused to be named, said the victim used to live in their place before with his girlfriend, who lived in Sitio Kawayan.

“Dugay na man ‘na sila nagbuwag. Nagminyo na man og lain si Marilou sa Manila. Ambot lang pud na sige pa siya og ari,” she said.

Singson said they are still facing a blank wall as to the motive behind the attack on Sherwin. He said the victim frequented the place, but it was not yet known who he was visiting there.

The incident happened in broad daylight and many could have witnessed what happened, but none of the residents would cooperate with police, he said.

“Pero naa g’yud ni siya’y atraso tali kay gipatay man g’yud,” he said.

Police recovered five empty shells and four live rounds of a .45 cal. pistol and two slugs from a gun of undetermined caliber from the crime scene. They surmise the victim also had a gun that was taken by the assailant as he fled.

The victim’s body is now at the Surelife Funeral Homes.  (FREEMAN)
