Guard nabbed for firing gun

Russell Mae L. Ego-ogan - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A security guard was arrested after he indiscriminately fired his service firearm in Sitio Calero, Lopez Jaena St. Barangay Tinago Cebu City at dawn yesterday.

The suspect was identified as Rodel Salcedo, employed at L and G security agency. Salcedo admitted that he was drunk when he fired the company issued caliber .38 revolver. Fortunately, no one was hit by the bullet.

Salcedo said that his fight with his girlfriend prompted him to drink.

â€œNag-away mi sa akong uyab tungod ra pud sa kwarta ( I had a fight with my girlfriend because of money),” he said.

The suspect, who was off duty that time, brought his gun outside his house and fired a shot into the air. The gunfire alerted Police Officer 3 Christopher Sanchez of the Waterfront Police Station 3 who was on a roving patrol during that time.

Sanchez immediately responded and arrested Salcedo. The policeman seized the firearm with one bullet inside the cylinder and four empty shells.

Salcedo will be charged for violation of Republic Act 8294 or Illegal Possession of Firearms.

If found guilty, Salcedo would face a minimum penalty of two years imprisonment to a maximum of five years and P15,000 fine. — (FREEMAN)
