VECO rewires Liloan Central School for free

CEBU, Philippines - The Visayan Electric Company yesterday turned over a newly-rewired school building in Liloan, Cebu to the Department of Education.

VECO spokesperson Theresa Gonzales said the project cost P600,000 and was the biggest so far.

“This is for the safety sa school building og sa mga school children. This is our one way of giving back to the community that we served,” said Gonzales.

Gonzales said that while other corporate citizens or companies opted to donate school buildings or classrooms, books and other school paraphernalia, VECO is doing its share of responsibility in line with its business model.

Gonzales said that for this year, they earmarked to rewire 14 different schools in the province.

The turnover of this newly-rewired Liloan Central School yesterday was the fourth this year. The said school, built in 1969 and completed in 1975, has 50 classrooms with current population of 2,350 students.

Present in yesterday’s turnover were Sebastian Lacson, VECO chief operating officer, officials from the DepEd, teachers and representative from the school’s Parents-Teachers Association.

The other three school buildings that were rewired this year were the elementary schools of Banilad, Garing and Danlag with 26, nine and ten classrooms, respectively.

Gonzales said that from 2010 until now, they have rewired 25 school buildings with a total project cost of P15 million.

“We want to ensure the safety of the school first, before giving other projects such as infrastructure, computerization and library kits,” she added.

VECO rewiring project is done at no cost on the part of the school. They are doing this as part of their corporate social responsibility.  (FREEMAN)
