CEBU, Philippines - A security officer of the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) power plant died and another was injured when the vehicles they were riding was hit by a cargo truck on the National Highway of Barangay Poblacion Ward 3, Minglanilla Saturday morning.
Lauro Atillo, 42, and resident of Katipunan St., Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, died at the Minglanilla District Hospital due to severe injuries in different parts of his body.
Also injured during the accident was Santos Torres, 50, a resident of Barangay Vito, Minglanilla.
He was also taken to the same hospital and was treated as an outpatient.
PO2 Vincent Aliñabo, desk officer, said that Atillo was driving his Kawasaki Fury motorcycle (3221 YA) while Torres was also driving his private multicab (MDT 360). Both vehicles were traveling towards the South while the cargo truck was traveling on the opposite lane.
The police failed to get the plate number of the cargo truck and the name of the driver as it sped off towards Cebu City.
“Mura ug wala kabantay ang driver nga naigo ang multicab kay wala ra man, nidritso ra ug padagan, (The driver did not seem to notice that he hit the multicab because he just went on his way.)†Aliñabo said in a phone interview.
He added that the multicab tried to overtake the taxicab it was tailing and encroached on the other lane. However, it accidentally hit the rear portion of the cargo truck causing Torres to lose control of the vehicle.
The multicab then hit and dragged the motorcycle which was traveling ahead of the taxicab.
Due to the impact, the motorcycle hit the concrete electric post which caused Atillo and Torres to suffer injuries.
“Naguyod ang motorcycle unya wala man malabay ang driver didto punta sa poste sa kuryente, (The motorcycle was dragged and the driver slammed onto the concrete post.)†Aliñabo said.
Torres is now detained at the Minglanilla police stockade pending the filing of appropriate charges.
