CEBU, Philippines - A man reportedly shot himself to death shortly after he shot his live-in partner in the head in Barangay Capitol Site late Saturday night.

Benjie Sinangote, 27, died of a gunshot wound in the chest while her live-in partner, Maria Cecilia Oliveros, 22, is now fighting for her life at the hospital.

Homicide Section investigation shows that jealousy prompted Sinangote, who worked as baker and a native of Daanbantayan town, to shoot Oliveros, a staff of a book manufacturing company and a native of Negros Occidental.

The incident took place in their rented room in sitio Ipil-Ipil at past 10 p.m. last Saturday.

Anecito Dalida, son of the victims’ landlady, said the two have been staying in their rented room for one year now.

Dalida said he was at the nearby room when he heard Oliveros said, “Di lagi ko mobiya nimo, Jie.” (I won’t leave you, Jie.) It was followed by two gunfire prompting Dalida to seek help from the police.

A policeman from the Motorcycle Response Unit first responded and forcibly opened the door to the victims’ room.

Sinangote was found lying on the bed lifeless with a gunshot wound on the left side of his chest. Oliveros, who was still breathing, was rushed by the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation to the Cebu City Medical Center.

Oliveros sustained a gunshot wound in the left side of the temple. The bullet exited on her right temple, near her forehead.

SPO4 Alex Dacua, Homicide Section team leader, said Oliveros is now admitted at the hospital and has a good chance of survival.

Caliber. 22 Magnum revolver with five empty shells in its cylinder. An empty shell of the same caliber was also found stuck on Sinangote’s chest, said Dacua.

Both Sinangote and Oliveros will undergo paraffin test while the firearm will be submitted to a ballistic examination for further investigation.

Dacua however said they have already established that Sinangote shot Oliveros first then turned the gun on himself.

Apart from Oliveros’ words, Dacua said the two were not heard arguing prior to the incident. (FREEMAN)  FPL
