Two men commit suicide

CEBU, Philippines - Two persons committed suicide due to depression in Toledo City and Moalboal town last Wednesday.

In Toledo City, Jimmy Flores Cabase, who was left by his live-in partner was found hanging dead by his neighbor, Monching Saballen, around 7:15 a.m. in Sitio Lamakan, Barangay Luray II.

Cabase, 32, used a nylon rope to hang himself from a beam in a shanty just a few meters away from the house of his cousin, Clemencia Galgoris, where he was temporarily staying.

Initial investigation conducted by SPO3 Praxilo Albiso revealed that Cabase started drinking heavily due to depression after his live-in partner left him several months ago.

Cabase's live-in partner also sold their house which forced Cabase to stay with his friends and relatives.

"Sukad kuno ato sige na lang ni ug kaguol unya kada-adlaw gyud mo-inom," Albiso said in a phone interview.

Albiso believes that Cabase committed suicide Tuesday evening because the body was already in rigor mortis when discovered. The body was taken to the St. Francis Funeral Homes in Barangay Poblacion for proper disposition.

In the afternoon, a 20-year-old believed to be suffering from depression also hanged himself inside his room in Barangay Basdiot, Moalboal.

Eljer Tapales allegedly got depressed when he was accused of stealing the P7,000 cash of his sister which had been sent by their mother from abroad.

The victim's father, Algery Tapales, checked on Eljer and found him hanging with a blanket looped around his neck around 3:20 p.m.

Algery immediately untied the blanket and rushed Eljer to the Badian District Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

PO2 Romeo Legaspi said the victim's mother reported Eljer left school after he was found to have a bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis for a mood disorder in which individuals experience episodes of frenzied state of typically alternating episodes of depression.

"Ug badlungon ni siya masuko kuno unya malain," Legaspi said in a phone interview.

Eljer attempted to commit suicide before by slashing his wrist but his father found out what he did and he was rushed to the hospital.  (FREEMAN)
