Farmer shot dead in Alcantara town

CEBU, Philippines - A 21-year-old farmer was shot dead Saturday evening by still unidentified assailant while sleeping inside his nipa hut in Barangay Salagmaya, Alcantara, Cebu.

Rene Remotigue was found dead by his sister, Marisa Remotigue, on Easter Sunday morning.

Marisa was supposed to visit her brother when she found the victim bloodied. Investigation shows that the victim sustained several gunshot wounds.

SPO3 Brendo Joel Beriarmente said that one of the neighbors of Remotigue claimed to have heard several gunshots from the direction of the victim’s hut at around 9:00 p.m. last Saturday. The witness did not check on the victim because of fear.

Beriarmente said that the gunman may have entered into the victim’s hut and shot the latter several times.

“Gisulod ni siya sa balay unya gipusil pero maglisod mi ug determine pila ka tawo gabuhat kay walay silingan ang mo-cooperate bisan ang pamilya muingon man nga ang Ginoo na la’y bahala (The undetermined number of perpetrators went inside the house and shot the victim. We could not determine how many were responsible because the neighbors and even the family members are uncooperative),” the investigator said.

The police found 11 empty shells and three slugs of caliber .45 pistol at the crime scene.

Beriarmente said that the victim did not have any derogatory record at the barangay hall as well as with the police.  (FREEMAN)
