Tojeno, a resident of sitio Tugasan Guadalajara, Barangay Guadalupe was about to cross the street near a gasoline station in the area when he was hit by a Kawasaki Private motorcycle (5513 GK) driven by Edano at 1 pm.

Edano, also a resident of Barangay Guadalupe, was travelling towards N. Bacalso Avenue enroute to Pardo Area when he figured in the accident.

Due to the impact, the victim was thrown away and suffered severe head injuries.

The Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation rushed the victim to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for possible treatment but the attending physician pronounced him dead a few hours later.

The driver surrendered voluntarily to the Traffic Patrol Group personnel and is being held temporarily pending the filing of charges.

Meanwhile, one died and two others were injured when the vehicle driven by a municipal health officer hit the victims who were seated along the road Thursday shortly before 6:00 in the evening in Barangay Malabago, Badian.

Samson de la Peña, 58, municipal health officer of Alegria town, reportedly fell asleep while driving causing him to hit the victims along the national highway.

Fishermen, Edieberto Cabalieda, 52; Juncarl Aspacio, 23; and Climaco Alquizar, 20, all of the said barangay suffered severe injuries in different parts of their bodies.

But of the three, Alquizar was declared dead on the spot by Dr. Urduja Espiritu, Badian municipal health officer.

De la Peña was driving his Mitsubishi Sedan bearing plate number GDM-587 traveling towards Barangay Poblacion, Badian from Alegria town when the incident happened.

Insp. Reyco Romaguera, Badian police chief, said de la Peña reportedly fell asleep and went straight to a slightly curved portion of the road.

“Tungod sa kakapoy nakatulog siya (de la Peña) unya nidiritso siya sa kurbada wala na kabawi (He was so tired that he fell asleep and was not able to veer away from the curved portion of the road),” Romaguera said in a phone interview.

The victims were sitting fronting the seashore at that time and did not immediately notice the approaching vehicle.

“Nagnanaw-nanaw ra ni sila sa dagat kay magyayong na unta sa ilang sakayan (They were just looking at the sea and was about to carry their fishing boats),” Romaguera said.

After hitting the victims, de la Peña even rammed a concrete house along the road. Fortunately, none was hit.

Police detained de la Peña at the Badian police stockade but was released yesterday afternoon after the families of the victims refused to file a case against him.

Alquizar’s remains now lies at the St. Ann Funeral Homes in Barangay Poblacion.  (FREEMAN)
