CEBU, Philippines - Today marks the 76th charter anniversary of the city of Cebu.

This morning, there will be a Eucharistic celebration at the Plaza Sugbu followed by a speech by Mayor Michael Rama.

To honor the “father of Cebu City,” a floral offering at the Don Vicente Rama bust located at the Cebu City Fire Bureau office shortly follows.

In the evening, a testimonial dinner and awarding of outstanding individuals and institutions take place at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Prior to this, several activities were done as part of the anniversary celebration, including the Valentine's Day Celebration at the Cebu City Hall lobby, Free Concert called “Pasundayag at Plaza Independencia with Pilita and Elizabeth Ramsey,” Charter Day Fun Run/Walk, Essay Writing Contest, Inter-Department Services Showcase, Memorial Lecture, Agro Fair at Plaza Sugbo, Awarding of Outstanding Farmers, Awarding of Outstanding Employees, and Sayawit.

On the 27th, the outstanding city youth leaders will also be awarded.

The city was inaugurated on February 24, 1937 with former Cebu Provincial Treasurer Alfredo Jacinto sworn in as the first city mayor by then Interior Secretary Elpidio Quirino, who represented President Manuel Quezon.

Don Vicente Rama authored Commonwealth Act No. 58 creating the City of Cebu Charter, which was approved on October 20, 1934.

Moreover, Republic Act 7827 declared February 24 as a special non-working holiday in Cebu City.

This was enacted on March 24, 1992 with former Representative Raul del Mar as the principal author. (FREEMAN)
