CEBU, Philippines - A 20-year-old farmer was shot dead Saturday afternoon by still unidentified assailant while on his way home in the mountain barangay of Dug-as, Alcoy.

Venerando “Randy” Carungay, resident of Sitio Malarid in the said barangay, succumbed to a single gunshot wound in the head.

The lifeless victim was found bathed with his own blood at 4:00 pm last Saturday by a concerned citizen who immediately requested police assistance.

The victim was rushed to the Alcoy Rural Health Unit but was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Max Cang.  The police remain clueless of the motive behind the killing.

PO2 Marivel Pardo said that Carungay was also shot in the head last December but survived. Pardo said they are still investigating whether the previous incident is connected in his death.

Meanwhile, a suspected thief was injured after he was shot by unidentified assailant shortly after midnight of Sunday at Sitio Gemilina, Barangay Poblacion, Barili.

Victor Panugaling, 26, who is also a suspected drug pusher, sustained gunshot wound in the left hand.

Panugaling was reportedly sitting outside the house of a certain Salome Alcoseba when the assailant approached and shot him without any provocation.  The victim was taken to the Barili District Hospital where he was treated.

Chief Insp. Arvi Arbius, Barili police chief, said Panugaling was allegedly a noted thief in the barangay. They also received several complaints against him.

Arbius however said he believes that shooting has something to do with the victim’s alleged involvement in illegal drugs.— /FPL (FREEMAN)
