Woman shot dead in Lapu-Lapu

Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - A 40-year-old woman was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant while attending a benefit dance in Barangay Babag II, Lapu-Lapu City a few minutes before midnight last Saturday.  Celda Ybañez of Purok Tambis, Barangay Canjulao, was waiting for her friend Alvin Dungog who went out of the dancing area when a man shot her in the head.

Ybañez and Dungog were supposed to go home when the incident happened.

Police rushed Ybañez to the Lapu-Lapu District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.  Police are now pursuing illegal drugs as possible motive of the killing because Ybañez was reportedly involved in the illegal activity.

The police have yet to get more information about this report.

PO2 Luisito Ernie, homicide investigator, said two men were involved in the killing because witnesses saw the assailant ran towards a waiting motorcycle parked a few meters away from the scene.

Ernie said barangay tanods chased the assailant but failed to arrest him. Both men sped off towards Cordova town.  Ernie added that Ybañez’s husband is now jailed at the Lapu-Lapu City Jail in Barangay Soong and facing a case for illegal drugs.

He also disclosed that the husband has another woman who has four children, an issue which causes frequent arguments of the couple.

“Naay laing babaye kuno nga maoy hinungdan sa away pero dugay na to dagko na gani kuno ang mga anak so possible lang drugs ni,” Ernie said in a phone interview. (There’s another woman who is reportedly the reason for their quarrels, but that was a long time ago. We’re looking at illegal drugs.) (FREEMAN)
