Former police chief to attend brgy. Assembly

CEBU, Philippines - MAJ. GEN. (ret.) RAMON E MONTAÑO, former PC-INP chief, will grace the occasion in today’s year-end gathering of barangay tanods, deputized members of the Barangay Public and Safety Officer (BPSO), including members of the Guardian Brotherhood as well as retired AFP and PNP officers.

The assembly will be held at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Gym in barangay Punta Princesa, this city starting at 11 am today.

Montaño, who was chief of the PNP during the term of the late President Cory Aquino, will talk about strategies against drug abuse, trafficking and organized crime. As PC/INP chief, he was responsible for keeping the whole command solidly intact during the December 1989 coup attempt. It was during his incumbency as PC/INP chief that he enhanced the police organization’s image by the relentless removal of misfits and scalawags, attainment of greater police visibility and uncompromising enforcement of the law, among others.

For his part, Punta Princesa barangay captain Jose F. Navarro, who was himself an achiever as Most Outstanding Barangay Captain in the Philippines in 1999, said Montaño who is an outstanding military leader and uncompromising gallant fighter for law and order, will indeed provide a better yardstick for local public safety officers how to go about their daily duties and responsibilities.  (FREEMAN)
