“Angry” python kills laborer

Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  A laborer died after a python reportedly coiled around him while he was walking on a grassy area in Sitio Atabay, Barangay Macaas, Catmon, Thursday evening.

Alvin Molijon Sususco, 37, and resident of the said place, was reportedly bitten by a python which coiled around him after he allegedly grabbed the snake’s head, causing it to retaliate. Sususco suffered a snake bite in his left arm and contusions in different parts of his body causing his immediate death.

Prior to the incident, Alvin was reportedly with his cousin, Janell Sususco, heading to a hut located at a hilly portion of the said place at 9:30p.m., when they saw the snake which was about three meters in length and 10 inches in diameter.

Alvin allegedly joked that he would grab the snake’s head. His cousin, Janell, objected and told him to just to let the snake pass by.

But Alvin did not mind his cousin and pushed through with his plan.

Just as Alvin grabbed the snake’s head, the python tightly coiled around Alvin’s neck, choking him.

SPO2 Rex Menchavez, of the Catmon Police Station, said Janell ran as fast as he could towards their house and sought assistance from her two brothers, Jurix and Reil, who then took bolos and rushed to the scene.

Jurix hacked the python’s tail while Riel hacked its body causing it to uncoil and fall to the ground. Alvin did not survive.

The Catmon police turned over the dead snake to personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Catmon who then advised that the python be buried.  (FREEMAN)
