CEBU, Philippines - Two days after two detainees bolted from the Tuburan detention cell, another drug suspect escaped from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Caputatan Sur, Medellin town, at around 7:00 in the evening last Monday.
Pedro Canales, 43, of Barangay Tominhao, Daanbantayan, was reportedly fixing the motorcycle owned by the jailer-on-duty last Monday. Canales grabbed the opportunity to escape using the same motorcycle.
Jail Officer 1 Richie Alfornon, jailer-on-duty, tried to chase Canales but he allegedly stumbled and fell to the ground. Alfornon said he sought the assistance from his colleagues who were on duty at that time.
A brief chased ensued before other jail officers lost sight of Canales who sped off towards Daanbantayan town.
Sr. Insp. Noel Ybarsabal, jail warden, told The FREEMAN that the Honda motorcycle (YM 8803) owned by Alfornon was recovered in a follow-up operation last Tuesday afternoon in Barangay Malingin, Daanbantayan.
Initial investigation of the BJMP- Medellin revealed that Alfornon asked
Canales to fix his motorcycle outside the detention cell after it failed to start.
Alfornon was reportedly keeping an eye on Canales as the latter drove to test the motorcycle but he suddenly sped off leaving Alfornon behind.
“Bawal man ‘yan na suguon for personal purpose ang priso. Andu’n din kasi ‘yung susi sa motor. Nang papalayo na, gigukod man pero wala naapsan, (Using prisoners for personal errands is prohibited. The key was also in the motorcycle ignition. When he started fleeing, policemen chased him but failed to catch him.)” Ybarsabal said in a phone interview.
Canales has a pending case for violation of Section 5 of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
He was arrested by the Daanbantayan police and was transferred to the BJMP-Medellin last October 31.
The BJMP-Medellin is now coordinating with the police stations of Medellin, Daanbantayan, San Remigio, and Bogo City.
The BJMP regional office is also investigating the incident to file an administrative case against Alfornon.
Recently, Jenard Pacquiao Magpuyo, 25, of Barangay Daan Lungsod, and Danilo Sanchez Navarro, 51, of Barangay 5, both of Tuburan town, bolted from the Tuburan detention cell Saturday dawn while PO2 Jezrel Perigo, jailer-on-duty, left to cook something to eat.
The Provincial Investigation and Detection Management Branch started their week-long investigation last Monday. — (FREEMAN)
