CEBU, Philippines - A man nearly joined the dearly departed after he was shot while drinking with his brother inside a cemetery in Barangay Poblacion III, Carcar City, last All Souls’ Day.

Edwardo Saducas, 45, sustained a gunshot wound to the nape after he was shot by a man believed to be the same one he earlier had an argument with, according to Carcar City Police chief Teodulfo Manatad III.

Saducas, a resident of Barangay Liboron, was drinking inside the municipal cemetery in Sitio Dap-dap, Barangay Poblacion, past 1 p.m. last Friday with his brother Fortunato when he was shot.

The victim was rushed to the Carcar District Hospital for treatment while the assailant fled.

Manatad said that prior to the incident, Saducas had an argument with another man who is believed to be the assailant.  Police are now looking for that person.

Earlier that same day, Richard Maquiputin, 37, was shot dead by his own friend Jembel Porponio, 32, inside a public cemetery in Dumanjug town.

The suspect, who was believed to be semi-conscious when he shot the victim after being roused from sleep, was arrested while the victim died of gunshot wounds in the different parts of the body.

In Barangay Ibabao, Cordova town, a security guard shot and killed his own cousin at past 9 a.m. yesterday.

Police identified the victim as Antonio Baguio, 53, and the suspect as Gregorio “Gori” Baguio, 35, a native of Bohol currently working as a security guard in Mandaue City.

SPO1 Laurencio Wagwag of the Cordova Police Station said the victim was sitting on a bench talking to two friends when the suspect, who lived just nearby, arrived and shot the victim without a word.

The suspect fled while the victim was no longer rushed to the hospital after he died on the spot from a gunshot wound to the forehead.

Wagwag said the victim and the suspect had long-standing grudge, which is believed to be the motive behind the attack.  In 2008 the two figured in a brawl that injured them both, Wagwag added.

In Barangay Busogon, San Remigio, a young man trying to defend his brother against maulers ended up shot late Friday afternoon.

Rolly Talisik, 23, was shot and also mauled by suspects Roel Dadol and Jamby Dadol.

Talisik reportedly rushed to help his brother who was being mauled by a group of men near the Busogon Elementary School when the suspects shot him, hitting his back and left arm. Another suspect struck his head with a rock.

Talisik was then rushed to a hospital in Bogo City while the suspects immediately fled.

In Barangay Cabalawan, Sogod town, Romulo Doña, 52, was also injured after he was shot by an unidentified person around 8 a.m. last Friday.

Doña was answering the call of nature in the area when the suspect appeared and shot him in the chest.

The victim was rushed to the Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital but was transferred to a hospital in Cebu City due to his critical condition.

Police officials have said that the holiday celebration in Central Visayas was generally peaceful despite these incidents.  — (FREEMAN)
