Gullas supports Garcia, Magpale
CEBU, Philippines - The Alayon Party of first district Rep. Eduardo Gullas is supporting the gubernatorial bid of third district Rep. Pablo John Garcia despite his national party’s alliance with the Liberal.
Gullas declared his support for Garcia as he filed his certificate of candidacy for mayor in Talisay City yesterday. Aside from Gullas, all incumbent mayors in the first district, except for San Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy, have also declared their support for Garcia.
“It’s PJ,” Gullas told reporters after several weeks of dodging questions of who among Garcia and Hilario “Junjun” Davide, III will he support for governor.
“I thank Congressman Eddiegul for his trust and confidence in my capability to lead the province,” Garcia said upon learning Gullas’ decision to support him.
Garcia said that the support of Gullas would surely boost his chances.
“Coming from a veteran legislator and the longest serving governor in the history of Cebu, that is certainly a resounding vote of confidence and a major shot in the arm for our campaign,” Garcia said.
Davide on the other hand said, “I respect the decision of Congressman Gullas for whom I have the highest regard. The elections are still months away and I hope he will change his mind in light of the understanding between the LP and the NP in Manila.”
Gullas however is supporting Davide’s runningmate, Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, over Garcia’s Ramon “Boboy” Durano IV.
“I will support Agnes because she is like a family to us,” Gullas said.
Durano said he will respect Gullas’ decision to support Magpale. He said he will just work harder to campaign in the first district.
“I have my full respects to Cong. Eddie who has been very close to the family and especially with my dad since they were in their teens,” said Durano in a text message to The FREEMAN.
Gullas’ decision to support Garcia over Davide somehow threatened the coalition of Nacionalista Party and the Liberal Party. Alayon is allied with the NP.
Gullas was also an ally of Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in the 2010 elections. In deference to Gullas, One Cebu Party is not also fielding candidates in the first district. —(FREEMAN)
