Teenage mom who kills daughter wants to finish school

- Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The teenage mother who stabbed her one-year-old daughter dead in Barangay Saavedra, Moalboal Sunday afternoon wants to return to school next year to finish her high school.

The 16-year-old mother who is also recuperating at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center because of a self-inflicted stab wound she sustained while trying to commit suicide said that she plans to enroll at the Moalboal National High School next year.

The girl said she wanted to finish her school and get a decent job.

“Gusto ko maka-trabaho kung wala koy bad record tungod sa akong nabuhat (If my record is clear after what I have done, I want to get a job,” the mother said.

She admitted killing her daughter after she allegedly lost control of herself because of anger. According to her, she was mad at her uncle who was also the father of her baby.

Her anger was triggered upon seeing the rashes on her baby’s skin.

“Na-demonyohan naman ko ato panahona wala nako kahibawo sa akong nabuhat (I did not know what I did),” she said.

The mother stabbed her baby several times using a 12-inch long kitchen knife. After killing her baby, she also stabbed herself twice. The baby was declared dead on arrival at the Moalboal Health Center while the mother survived and is now recovering at the VSMMC.

Lina Aquino, Municipal Social Welfare Development Officer, told The FREEMAN that they are assisting the needs of the mother including psychological intervention as well as financial assistance.

“We will assist her throughout the process together with the DSWD-7,” Aquino said.

Jaybee Binghay, Public Information Officer of the DSWD-7, said the mother needs more than just a stress debriefing and they are yet to determine what kind of psychological evaluation she needs.— (FREEMAN)
