USJ-R recognizes families of distinction
CEBU, Philippines - Four distinct families of Cebu were awarded during the recognition of the 75 Families of Distinction at the University of San Jose Recoletos yesterday.
The four families who received the awards were the clan of Abellana, Alcoseba, Cañete and Villanueva.
These families received recognition for their significant achievements in various fields here and abroad.
The search for 75 families started when the city of Cebu celebrated its diamond year as chartered city in September, 2011.
According to Alice Kate Quiblatin, these families have contributed significant achievements which mirrored the strong foundation and the values of the Cebuano family.
These model families have made a great impact in the growth and the development of Cebu City.
Two major criteria have been made in choosing the 75 families of distinction.
“It requires that these families should be residents of Cebu and has made significant achievements not later than 1965,” said Quiblatin.
At least three members of the clan have made significant contributions that are recognized here and abroad in the field of governance, community service, business, arts and culture, science, technology, environment, industry, media, sports and religious apostolate.
The Abellana clan is composed of artists, playwrights, actors, musicians, painters and sculptors, while the Alcoseba clan is composed of visual artists and renowned citizens of the religious apostolate.
The Cañete clan is composed of achievers in the field of sports, military service and local governance and the Villanueva clan excelled in public service, governance and law, and medical professions.
On the other hand, the Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama recognized these four clans and their contributions to making Cebu what it is now.
Sr. Flora Alcoseba, ICM said they were surprised by the award. “We are surprised that we have been chosen because originally we are from Carcar.”
Engineer Herbert Alcoseba said their family is distinctive for their service to God and to humanity.
Lawyer Artemio Abellana said that perhaps they are the biggest family in Cebu because anywhere in Cebu there are Abellanas.
Lawyer Dionisio Cañete said their family is good in Eskrima and that they have to spend more time developing that sport. (FREEMAN)
