CEBU, Philippines - Two men recently died in Cebu City because of full-blown Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Dr. Ilya Tac-an of the City Health’s Sexually Transmitted Disease did not identify the fatalities but revealed that they were engaged in the practice of injecting illegal drugs and having sex with men.
“Mas maayo gayud nga maglikay na lang nga dili mogamit og multiple partners kay kuyaw kaayo. Kun dili malikayan kinahanglang mogamit gayud og preventive measure sama sa condom, (It is best to avoid having multiple partners because it is very dangerous. If unavoidable, then use preventive measures like condoms.)” Tac-an said.
This year alone, City Health officials discovered 116 new positive cases of Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) that brought to 532 the total number of HIV positives in Cebu City since 1989.
According to Tac-an, there is a possibility that because of their massive information drive, more persons were encouraged to submit themselves to tests. Detection of the illness may have also led to the increase in the number of positive cases.
Most of the HIV positive cases are males who admitted that they engaged in injecting illegal drugs with unsafe needles which led to the transmission of the virus. - THE FREEMAN
