UV-Toledo, Minglanilla inaugurate new bldgs

- The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas yesterday inaugurated two three-storey buildings in its Toledo and Minglanilla campuses.

UV Executive Vice President Jose “Dodong” Gullas led the Gullas family and the school executives in the inauguration of the new building in Toledo City which houses 40 classrooms for at least 300 college students.

Gullas said the building is named after his stillborn older sister, Teresita. The Teresita Building will house the students taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, BS in Elementary Education, BS in Secondary Education, and BS in Criminology. The school also offers Kindergaten 1 and 2, Elementary and High School educations.

But Gullas said they expect the elementary and the high school departments to be moved few years from now to the 3,300-square meter property that the

school has bought recently. The location, which is just a walking distance from the old campus, will also house a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

Toledo City Mayor Rudy Espinosa thanked UV for bringing education into the city.

“Thank you UV for making our city a learning place... for helping educate our children,” Espinosa said.

He said that with UV, students from Toledo and the neighboring localities do not have to go to Cebu City anymore to get a college education.

“UV gives equal opportunities to all, especially those who can barely

afford college education. Because of its cheap fees, it is a springboard to success to those who find it difficult to enter college,” he added.

Espinosa was also proud to announce that he is an alumnus of the school being one of its high school graduates in 1968.

“Ug wa ang UV di sad ko ma-mayor (If not because of UV I would not have become mayor),” he said in jest.

The UV-Toledo Campus was established in 1947 by the late Vicente Gullas. The main campus along Colon St. in Cebu City was opened in 1919.

In Minglanilla, Samsam Gullas, assistant VP for administration and finance, thanked the parents for sending their students to school. He said supportive

parents, competitive teachers and a willing student are “recipes of success.” (FREEMAN)
