Brgy workers get June honorarium

CEBU, Philippines - At least 3,500 employees in all 80 barangays in the city received their honorarium for June. Yesterday’s distribution was the first since the city decided to distribute the honorarium on a monthly basis.

City Hall released a total of P9.2 million for the honorarium of tanods, barangay environment officers, barangay health workers, members of the lupon tagapamayapa, and garbage truck drivers and loaders. This represents the counterpart of the city government in their total monthly salary. Their regular pay is given by their respective barangays.

The city has been augmenting the salary of barangay workers to help them appropriate more funds for other basic services. Some barangays, like in the mountain barangays, could hardly afford to pay their tanods and lupons because they do not have enough funds.

There are 1,658 tanods receiving P2,000; 927 lupon members receiving P2,000 monthly; 346 BEOs receiving P3,000; 148 BHWs receiving P4,000; and 480 drivers and loaders receiving P5,000 from the city every month.

The barangay used to pay for the drivers and loader of garbage trucks, but when the city government declared the “Gubat sa Basura,” it also decided to shoulder their honorarium.

For the rest, the other part of their salary varies in amount from one barangay to another.

The city used to release the honorariums on a quarterly basis. However, the barangay employees complained that the slow process is hurting their everyday requirements.  (FREEMAN)
