CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government has stopped issuing checks for withdrawal at the Philippine Postal Savings Bank.
City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva said last week that they did this after the bank tagged some of their issued checks.
She did not confirm though if the checks were tagged, or temporarily held, in relation to the Rallos case.
She added the tagged checks were recalled and the payees were issued another check for withdrawal at the Land Bank of the Philippines.
“Adto na mi sa Landbank kay mas dako man atong kwarta didto,” Oliva said over a phone interview last Friday.
The Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan reported that a supplier complained that the check issued by the city to be encashed at the Philippine Postal Bank bounced.
Oliva, however, denied this saying no supplier complained to the City Treasurer’s Office.
She said that there is no bouncing check but that they have recalled some checks for immediate replacement.
PPSB P. del Rosario Branch Manager Ricardo Cordova confirmed they tagged about two checks issued by the city over a week ago.
He said that the bank tags checks when there is a court order or if the account does not have enough balance.
The tagging of checks a week ago was because it was charged to the wrong account.
Cordova said that so far, there is no problem with the city’s accounts. — (FREEMAN)
