Escaped detainee arrested

CEBU, Philippines - A detainee who escaped from the Borbon Police Station stockade three years ago was arrested by the Borbon police yesterday afternoon after a brief boat chase in the waters off Barangay Tagnucan, Borbon.

Edison Cabahug sustained a gunshot wound in his right leg after resisting arrest.

He was taken to the Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital in Sogod town.

An informant reportedly called the police station after he saw Cabahug, a suspected drug pusher, drinking by the shore of the said place.

PO2 Bernardino Almeda of the Borbon Police Station said as they approached the area, Cabahug saw them and he ran to a pump boat, gunned the engine and sped off. The police got on another pump boat and chased Cabahug until they caught up with him.

Almeda said Cabahug jumped to their pump boat and tried to grab his .45 cal. pistol which led to a brief commotion until Almeda decided to shoot him in the leg.

Chief Insp. Romeo Mananzala, investigator of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, later escorted Cabahug from the hospital and detained him at the CPDRC.

Meanwhile, in Balamban town, a 62-year-old man drowned while he and his friends were at the beach celebrating the feast day of St. John the Baptist before noon yesterday.

The friends of Esmael Amohen, a former barangay tanod, and a resident of Sitio Laray Uno, Barangay Buanoy, Balamban, said they were enjoying themselves when a boy suddenly said someone floating too far out.

Then they noticed Amohen was missing and swam out to the floater who turned out to be Amohen.

He was no longer breathing and unresponsive.

Amohen was reportedly drinking before he swam out to sea.

Police have recommended to have the body autopsied. — (FREEMAN)
