- Mylen P. Manto - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The driver of the car which killed the barangay captain of Tapon, Dalaguete town has been indicted for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.

This after Rodnel Ponce, of Barangay Candabong, Argao town, waived his right to undergo preliminary investigation to negate the allegations filed against him.

Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Marlon Atillo recommended the filing of the case before the Municipal Trial Court (MTC) in Dalaguete against Ponce who was driving the Nissan March which hit barangay captain Antonio Vergaño, 61, who later died at the hospital.

Upon verification, the Dalaguete Police said the Information (charge sheet) was already filed before MTC Dalaguete early yesterday.

Ponce was accused of hitting Vergaño, who just disembarked from the Ceres Bus he rode with his daughter from Cebu City last June 18, 2012 at around 7:00 p.m.

When Vergaño was about to cross the road, he was hit by the allegedly speeding vehicle with plate number KEG-285 which was driven by Ponce.

Due to the incident, the victim was thrown a few meters away and was injured in different parts of his body.

His family tried to save him by bringing him to the hospital where he later died.

Vergaño was a former municipal councilor who served for three straight terms before he was elected as barangay captain in 2010.

Atillo recommended P30,000 bail for Ponce’s temporary liberty. — (FREEMAN)
