CEBU, Philippines - The National Liga ng mga Barangay has passed a resolution supporting the call to synchronize the barangay elections with that of the national elections in 2016.
Association of Barangay Councils president and ex-officio member of the city council, Michael Ralota, who is the regional president for Central Visayas of the National Liga ng mga Barangay, said the league passed two resolutions calling for the postponement of the elections.
Resolution 011-2012, which is an outcome of the National Liga ng mga Barangay’s two proposed resolutions, is in support to President Benigno Aquino’s plan to synchronize barangay elections with the national elections.
During the meeting last April 30, the league also urged Congress to immediately facilitate the passage of a bill that will extend the term of office of barangay officials to six years with re-election but in no case shall their term of office exceed two terms.
There are several bills in Congress which have already been filed, calling for the resetting of barangay elections and extending the term of office of barangay officials to more than three years. — (FREEMAN)
