Boy killed and mother hurt by speeding van

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - A three-month-old boy was killed while his mother was seriously injured after they were hit by a van driven by a barangay captain while they were along the national highway in Sitio Purok Tomas, Barangay Kawit, Medellin town, last Sunday afternoon.

John Niño Tumakay, three months old, died at the Chong Hua Hospital where he and his mother Daria Tumakay were taken. Daria was still in critical condition as of last night.

Rene Olivar, barangay captain of Lamintac Norte, Medellin, is now detained at the Medellin police stockade after he surrendered to the police following the incident.

Medellin police investigator SPO4 Carlos Condino said Olivar was heading south on board his Toyota Hi-Ace GL Grandia with license plate numbers YKG-664 and hit the victims after lost control of his vehicle while he traversed a curve.

Daria was carrying John Niño when they were hit.

Condino said witnesses claimed the victims were thrown about five meters away from where they stood.

Both were taken to the Severo Verallo District Hospital for treatment before being referred to the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City where the boy later died.

Condino said that victims suffered major head injuries aside from multiple fractures.

The police tried to subject Olivar to a liquor test however the latter refused.

But Condino said Olivar was apparently under the influence of liquor at the time.

“Klaro man gud nga nakainom siya pero di man ta physician di nato ma-confirm gyud,” Condino said.

The vehicle of Olivar is now under police custody.

Charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide are now being prepared against the suspect. (FREEMAN)
